Our Story
A family business on Main Street since 2018, a piece of kitchen shorthand, and a kitchen that makes as much as it can itself.
The name
Whiskey down
“Whiskey down” is how you call for rye toast. Two words, understood instantly by anyone who has ever worked a line, and far quicker than making yourself heard over a hot griddle.
Our family can remember when shouting “rye toast” in the kitchen could get confused for the wrong side. “Whiskey down” became the way to get it right decades ago, and it’s a bit of history we pay homage to.
The shorthand stuck around long enough to become a name worth putting over a door — and a reminder of where the family learned to cook.

The kitchen
Made here, cooked to order
Read our menu closely and you will find the word homemade two dozen times over. The corned beef hash, the sausage gravy, the chicken salad, the coleslaw, the pico, the blue cheese, the Caesar dressing, the vodka sauce, the tzatziki — all of it is made in our kitchen rather than opened from a carton.
That is what focus buys you. It lets the kitchen put real attention on every plate, and it means the quality holds whether you came in for eggs at nine in the morning or a skirt steak at nine at night.
Breakfast runs all day, because people want eggs at four in the afternoon. And there is a full bar behind it, with a bourbon list worth reading, because a good plate of food deserves a good drink beside it.
The room
Worth staying in
It is a family business, and the parts we love most are the ones you feel from a booth: the warmth of the room, the regulars who have their table, the neighborhood that keeps turning up.
When the weather is good, the courtyard fills up under the string lights and the evening stretches out a little longer than anyone planned.
Through the year
Alongside the main menu we run a seasonal one that changes with what is good — lobster through the summer, peaches while they last, hot cocoa when it turns cold. We are on volume two of this summer’s, and the specials keep coming.

What’s next
A second Main Street
This fall we open a second room at 175 E. Main Street in Babylon Village. The same menu, the same kitchen behind it, and the same welcome — a short drive east, on another Main Street worth walking down.
What guides us
Genuine · Authentic · Passionate · Original
Four words we hold ourselves to, and a fair test for every decision we make — from what goes on the menu to how the room feels on a Tuesday night.
